Gift-giving is a fundamental element in relationships in general, be it family, friendship, or romantic relationships. For me, my least favorite is definitely exchanging gifts with your "other half".
Every single time a holiday or special occasion comes up, I start to worry about what type of present I'll receive, and what I should give them. I don't have a job or my own car, and I don't want to tell my parents that I need a gift for my boyfriend (my mom will want to be included in the process, and my dad doesn't want me dating until I've graduated from college). Therefore, I'm always forced to think up ideas on my own and sneak out to buy them. Also, when the boyfriend remembers the one-month anniversary and the girlfriend doesn't, it is very difficult to think of a last-minute present.
In addition, all of my boyfriends give stuffed animals. There's nothing wrong with stuffed animals, but when I get Hello Kitty or Domo....sorry, where'd you get the idea that I'm a typical Asian girl? Once, my boyfriend gave me flowers while I was thinking of breaking up with him. To say the very least, it was awkward.
Obviously, I haven't had the best experiences with gift-giving, and it's a lot easier to say "it's the effort that counts" than to believe it.
